Durood Shareef – Arabic, English Transliteration and Meaning
Durood Shareef (also known as Durood Ibrahim or Salawat Ibrahimiyya) is a powerful invocation recited by Muslims to send peace and blessings upon the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and his family. It is an essential part of Salah (prayer) and is recited in the final sitting (Qa’dah Akhirah) after Tashahhud.
Sending Salawat is not only a Sunnah but also a direct command from Allah in the Qur’an:
“Indeed, Allah and His angels send blessings upon the Prophet. O you who have believed, send blessings upon him and peace.”
(Surah Al-Ahzab 33:56)

Durood Shareef in Arabic (درود إبراهيم)
بِسْمِ اللّٰهِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِیْمِ
اَللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ، كَمَا صَلَيْتَ عَلَى إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَعَلَى آلِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ، إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ، وَ بَارِكْ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا بَارَكْتَ عَلَى إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَعَلَى آلِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ إِنَّكَ حَمِيْدٌ مَجِيْدٌ“
Durood Shareef In English
- Allahumma salli ‘ala Muhammadin wa ‘ala aali Muhammad,
- kama sallayta ‘ala Ibrahima wa ‘ala aali Ibrahima,
- innaka Hamidum Majid.
- Allahumma barik ‘ala Muhammadin wa ‘ala aali Muhammad,
- kama barakta ‘ala Ibrahima wa ‘ala aali Ibrahima,
- innaka Hamidum Majid.
Durood Ibrahim English Meaning (Translation)
- “O Allah, send Your mercy on Muhammad and on the family of Muhammad,
- as You sent mercy on Ibrahim and on the family of Ibrahim.
- Indeed, You are Praiseworthy, Glorious.
- O Allah, bless Muhammad and the family of Muhammad,
- as You blessed Ibrahim and the family of Ibrahim.
- Indeed, You are Praiseworthy, Glorious.”
When Is Durood Shareef Recited?
- During Salah (after Tashahhud, before concluding with Salam)
- On Fridays (as recommended in hadith)
- After Adhan
- During Dua (supplication) to make it more accepted
- Anytime, as a form of remembrance of the Prophet ﷺ
Virtues of Reciting Durood
- Fulfills a command of Allah (Qur’an 33:56)
- Brings ten blessings upon the one who recites it
- Increases love for the Prophet ﷺ
- Erases sins and raises one’s status
- The Prophet ﷺ said:
“Whoever sends blessings upon me once, Allah will send blessings upon him ten times.”
