Eating & Drinking: 8 Essential Sunnah Duas

In Islam, even the mundane act of eating and drinking is transformed into an act of worship when accompanied by the remembrance of Allah. Allah (SWT) says in the Quran:

“O you who believe! Eat of the lawful things that We have provided you with, and be grateful to Allah, if it is indeed He Whom you worship.” (Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:172)

The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) taught us specific etiquettes and supplications for meals. By reciting these Duas, we not only express gratitude to our Creator but also invite Barakah (blessings) into our sustenance. Here are 7 essential Sunnah Duas related to eating and drinking.

Dua When Food is Served

English Transliteration: Allahumma bārik lanā fīmā razaqtanā wa qinā ‘adhāban-nār

English Meaning: “O Allah, bless for us what You have provided us and save us from the punishment of the Fire.”

Dua Before Eating In Arabic (General)

Importance: The Sunnah of the Prophet (PBUH) is to mention the name of Allah before eating. This simple act prevents Shaytan from partaking in the meal.

Transliteration: Bismillah.

English Translation: “In the Name of Allah.”

Dua When Forgetting Bismillah: Beginning & End

Transliteration: Bismillahi awwalahu wa akhirahu

Meaning: “In the name of Allah, in its beginning and its end.”

Hadith: The Prophet ﷺ said:
“When one of you eats, let him mention the name of Allah. If he forgets, then let him say:
Bismillahi awwalahu wa akhirahu.”
(Abu Dawood, Hasan Sahih)

Dua After Eating: Supplication Upon Finishing Food

Importance: This is a highly virtuous Dua. The Prophet (PBUH) said that whoever eats food and recites this supplication, their past (minor) sins will be forgiven.

English Transliteration: Alhamdulillāhi-lladhī aṭ‘amanī wa saqānī wa ja‘alanī min al-muslimīn

English Meaning: “All praise is for Allah who fed me, gave me drink, and made me from among the Muslims.”

Another Sunnah After-Eating

Transliteration: Alhamdulillāhilladhī aṭ‘amanā wa saqānā wa kafānā wa āwānā, fakam mimman lā kāfiya lahu wa lā mu’wī

Meaning: “Praise be to Allah who fed us, gave us drink, sufficed us, and gave us shelter – how many have neither provider nor shelter!”

Hadith: Reported by Muslim in His Sahih.

Dua for Drinking Milk: Sunnah Supplication

Importance: Milk is considered a complete food. When the Prophet (PBUH) was given milk, he recited this special Dua asking for an increase in it, unlike other foods where we ask for something better.

Transliteration: Allahumma barik lana fihi wa zidna minhu.

English Translation: “O Allah, bless us in it and increase it for us.” (Sunan At-Tirmidhi: 3455)

Dua for Drinking Zamzam Water

Importance: While drinking Zamzam water, it is recommended to make Dua as “The water of Zamzam is for whatever it is drunk for.” Ibn Abbas (RA) used to recite this comprehensive supplication when drinking Zamzam.

Transliteration: Allahumma inni as’aluka ‘ilman nafi’an, wa rizqan wasi’an, wa shifa’an min kulli da’in.

English Translation: O Allah! For You I have fasted and upon your provision, I have broken my fast. ” (Abu Dawud: 2358)

Dua for Breaking Fast at Someone’s House

Importance: When breaking a fast at someone else’s home, the Prophet (PBUH) taught us to supplicate for the host with these words, invoking the blessings of angels upon them.

Transliteration: Aftara ‘indakumus-sa’imun, wa akala ta’amakumul-abrar, wa sallat ‘alaikumul-mala’ikah.

English Translation: “May the fasting people break their fast with you, may the pious eat your food, and may the angels send prayers upon you.” (Sunan Abu Dawud: 3854)
