سُبْحَانَ الَّذِي يُسَبِّحُ الرَّعْدُ بِحَمْدِهِ وَالْمَلَائِكَةُ مِنْ خِيْفَتِهِ
Transliteration
Subẓānal-ladhī yusabbiḥur-raʿdu biḥamdihī wal-malā’ikatu min khīfatih
Meaning
Glory is to Him whom the thunder praises, along with the angels, out of fear of Him.
Origin and Practice
This dua is traced back to the companions of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, particularly Abdullah ibn Zubayr رضي الله عنه, who would stop speaking when he heard thunder and recite this supplication. This is reported in Muwatta Malik (Hadith 1867) and Sunan Abu Dawood.
These narrations reflect the attitude of reverence and awe that the righteous predecessors held towards Allah’s signs in nature. Rather than fear or panic, they turned to remembrance and glorification.
