Sana Dua of Salah – Arabic, English Transliteration

The Sana Dua (also known as Dua al-Istiftah or Opening Supplication) is a beautiful invocation that is recited right after Takbir (Allahu Akbar) at the beginning of Salah (prayer), before Surah Al-Fatiha.

This short but powerful dua glorifies Allah and acknowledges His perfection. It was regularly recited by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and taught to his companions.

Tips for Memorizing Sana Dua

  1. Break it into 4 parts, memorize each one daily
  2. Understand the meaning – helps in better concentration during Salah
  3. Recite it in every Salah, even Sunnah/Nafl, for practice
  4. Listen to Qaris or short video clips to improve pronunciation

Sana Dua in Arabic

بِسْمِ اللّٰهِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِیْمِ
سُبْحَانَكَ اللَّهُمَّ وَبِحَمْدِكَ وَتَبَارَكَ اسْمُكَ وَتَعَالَى جَدُّكَ وَلا إلَهَ غَيْرُكَ

Sana Dua In English Transliteration

  • Subḥānaka allāhumma wa biḥamdika,
  • wa tabārakasmuka,
  • wa taʿālā jadduka,
  • wa lā ilāha ghayruk.

English Translation (Meaning)

  • “Glory is to You, O Allah, and praise is Yours.
  • Blessed is Your Name, and exalted is Your Majesty.
  • There is no deity worthy of worship except You.”

When is Sana Dua Recited in Salah?

  • Right after saying Takbir (“Allahu Akbar”) to start the prayer
  • Before reciting Surah Al-Fatiha
  • In all obligatory and voluntary prayers
