What Is Tashahhud in Islam?
Tashahhud is a core part of Salah that is recited while sitting in the final position (Qa’dah). It comes after sujood and before concluding the prayer with Salam.
The word Tashahhud means “bearing witness” and in this supplication, a Muslim testifies to the Oneness of Allah and the Prophethood of Muhammad ﷺ. It’s a spiritual declaration of faith made during every prayer.
Tips for Memorizing Tashahhud
- Repeat it after every Salah, especially aloud when praying alone
- Learn with meaning – it makes the words impactful
- Use audio recitations to refine pronunciation
- Break it into 3-4 phrases and memorize line by line
Tashahhud in Arabic
بِسْمِ اللّٰهِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِیْمِ
اَلتَّحِيَّاتُ لِلّٰهِ وَالصَّلَوَاتُ وَالطَّيِّبَاتُ، السَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ أَيُّهَا النَّبِيُّ وَرَحْمَةُ اللّٰهِ وَبَرَكَاتُهٗ، السَّلاَمُ عَلَيْنَا وَعَلٰى عِبَادِ اللّٰهِ الصَّالِحِيْنَ، أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لاَّ إِلٰهَ إِلاَّ اللّٰهُ وَأَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا عَبْدُهٗ وَرَسُوْلُهٗ
Tashahhud In English Transliteration
- At-tahiyyātu lillāhi waṣ-ṣalawātu waṭ-ṭayyibāt,
- As-salāmu ‘alayka ayyuhan-Nabiyyu wa raḥmatullāhi wa barakātuh,
- As-salāmu ‘alaynā wa ‘alā ‘ibādillāhiṣ-ṣāliḥīn,
- Ash-hadu allā ilāha illallāh,
- wa ash-hadu anna Muḥammadan ‘abduhu wa rasūluh.
Tashahhud English Translation (Meaning)
- All compliments, prayers, and pure words are for Allah.
- Peace be upon you, O Prophet, and the mercy of Allah and His blessings.
- Peace be upon us and upon the righteous slaves of Allah.
- I bear witness that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah,
- and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger.
When is Tashahhud Recited?
- In the sitting position (Qa’dah) of Salah
- After sujood in the second rak’ah (in 3 or 4 rak’ah prayers)
- In the final sitting of every prayer before concluding with Durood and Salam
Authenticity of the Tashahhud
This dua is authentically reported from the Prophet ﷺ and found in multiple narrations including:
- Sahih Bukhari
- Sahih Muslim
- Narrated by Abdullah ibn Mas’ud (RA) who said:
“The Prophet ﷺ taught me the Tashahhud as he taught me a Surah from the Qur’an.”
